Check Your Pond Water Level This Summer Near Rochester New York (NY)
Pond Maintenance Water Level Rochester NY

Maintaining Proper Pond Water Levels
During The Summer Heat Is Crucial.

As temperatures rise, it's essential to keep your pond well-oxygenated by maintaining  correct water level. This ensures that your pump and skimmer function efficiently, keeping your pond clean and debris-free.

Additionally, it provides a healthy environment for your fish. Adequate aeration is vital to counteract the decrease in dissolved oxygen that can occur as water temperature rises.

By taking these steps, you'll guarantee a thriving and comfortable habitat for your aquatic friends, even in the hottest of summer days.

Distinguishing Between Pond Water Loss: Leak or Evaporation

5/18/2024

NY|Distinguishing Between Pond Water Loss: Leak or Evaporation Near Rochester, New York
Pond Leak Detection Service Near Rochester NY

In the scorching heat of summer, it's easy to misinterpret water loss in your pond. A daily reduction of 1/2" to 3/4" is not unusual and generally isn't a cause for concern.

Several variables influence the extent of evaporation, such as cloud cover, shading, humidity, wind, and the design of your water feature. Ponds with long streams or fountains tend to lose more water as the increased surface area accelerates evaporation.

So, before you panic over a possible leak, consider these factors. Monitoring your pond's water levels while considering the weather conditions can help you differentiate between natural evaporation and a genuine problem.

Managing Summer Water Loss

During the summer, it's crucial to monitor water loss, which typically ranges from 2 to 5 inches per week. Several factors impact this loss, such as pump flow rate, sun exposure, rainfall, stream length, and splash volume.

To effectively manage water resources during this season, it's essential to understand how these elements interact.

By keeping a close eye on these variables, you can maintain water levels and ensure your water-related systems function optimally throughout the warmer months.

Why Doesn't My Pond Pump Work?

Why Doesn't My Pond Pump Work Near Rochester New York (NY)?
Pond Pump Does Not Work Near Rochester NY

Is Your Pump Constantly Tripping the GFI?

If your pump's GFI (ground fault interrupter) keeps tripping, try this quick test: unplug everything on the circuit and connect an unrelated device, such as a hair dryer or a cell phone charger. If the GFI still trips, the issue likely lies within the circuit.

However, if it doesn't trip, then your pump is likely the culprit.

Troubleshooting Pond Pump Circuit Trips

Picture

If your pond pump's GFI frequently trips, conduct a quick test. Unplug all devices on the circuit, then connect an unrelated item (e.g., hair dryer).

If the GFI still trips, the circuit is faulty. If not, the pump may be the issue. Swiftly identifying the source allows targeted troubleshooting—inspect the circuit for faults or consider pump maintenance.

This simple test ensures efficient resolution and the continued well-being of your pond ecosystem.

Are you having pond water clarity issues or would you like to make life easier as far as taking care of your pond is concerned?
Here are a few issues that we have resolved by upgrading or adding a new filtration system to an existing pond:

  1. Existing skimmers or waterfalls that are deformed or leaking.
  2. My pond has green water all the time.
  3. Under-sized skimmers and waterfall filters that were made for much smaller ponds.
  4. Filters that were improperly installed or designed.
  5. I have to get in the pond to clean or service my pump.
  6. Excess muck or sludge build-up on the bottom of your pond.
  7. Replacing canister style filters that are difficult to maintain.
  8. Skimmers that were installed with the door upside down.
  9. Signs of tree roots in the skimmer or waterfall filter.
  10. No waterfall or stream.
  11. My pump is clogging up all the time.
  12. Too many leaves settling to the bottom of pond.

Most Common Pond - Water Feature Problems We've Had To Fix | Rochester New York | NY
Picture
Would you like to save a lot of money, time and headaches on your new project? Of course, who wouldn't right?

Over the past 20+ years customers have come to us
with all kinds of water feature problems throughout the Rochester New York area and beyond. An improperly designed waterfall can cause a great deal of water loss, or it may just look unnatural and need a face lift or rejuvenation.

It's sad but true, our primary business is refurbishing and maintaining existing ponds to make them function properly. Some of these ponds installed by other "professional" pond installers or landscapers leave little to be desired, and loads of problems that drive people crazy and force them to look for help.

If you are thinking to hire a professional, please be sure to research your contractor first. This could  save a lot of frustration down the road.

We've been hired numerous times to re-do a pond that was recently built. Water features are meant to help you relax and enjoy them, not get you frustrated.

How To Measure The Water Level In Your Pond

5/12/2021

How To Measure Pond Water Level|Water Loss|Leaks|Rochester|New York|NY
Picture
If you think you might have a leak or just want to monitor the water level in your Rochester (NY)  pond, looking at water lines on rocks is NOT an indication of water loss. Water wicks on rocks and varies, making it ebb and flow and not a good way to see if you are losing water.

For a good reference, check for something that is plastic, like your skimmer box. Plastic does not hold water and will be a much better way to assess any water loss. Inside the skimmer there is usually screws that could be used to mark the water level.

What To Do When Your Fish Pond Freezes Over In Rochester NY

What To Do When Your Fish Pond Freezes Over|Rochester|NY|New York|Near Me

Upon arriving to my Rochester New York (NY) home after being out of town this March, I discovered my fish pond had completely frozen over. My floating pond de-icer and and solid handling pump were not running and my gfi outlet was tripped. It is very important for the health of your koi and pond fish to keep an opening in the ice so the toxic gases of decomposing plants and organic matter can escape and not get trapped under the ice. Use this as a reminder to check on your ponds throughout the winter and make sure there is an opening in the ice.

A Guide To Fix Fish Pond Leaks In Rochester NY

6/24/2017

How To Fix Fish Pond| Waterfall | leaks |Rochester|New York|NY

Is There A Leak In Your Pond, Or Are Your Frogs & Fish Drinking All The Water?

Leaks are among the most misunderstood and misdiagnosed problems  anyone can have in their Rochester New York (NY) pond or waterfall.

Understanding the basic principles of leak detection and repair will save you time, money, and headaches in your water gardening adventures …
I guarantee it!
Acorn’s Pond & Waterfall Leak Detection (And Repair!) Services Are Second To None In Rochester NY!

What Is Evaporation?

First, let's have a look at what evaporation is and what it isn't. Evaporation is caused by water turning into a vapor and escaping from your pond. The amount of water loss will vary according to the region of the country and the time of year.

Ponds that are located in areas of the country with moderate temperatures and high humidity can expect to see 1 to 1 ½ inches of water loss per week during the spring and summer. Most of this evaporation should be replaced naturally by rain. However, if you live in an area with high temperatures and low humidity, it's possible to see 3 inches or more of evaporation in a week.

The quantity and size of your waterfall(s) will also affect the amount of water that is lost. Regardless of the climate, a 4'x 6'pond with a 20-foot stream and 5 feet of cascading waterfalls may lose as much as 2 inches or more every day!

Why? Splashing and moving water has greater exposure to additional evaporation than does the still water in the pond. If that same pond was 16' x 21' pond, you'd probably never even notice the additional evaporation because it's a larger pond.

What It Isn't

Your Pond Leak Repair Service In Rochester (NY) Is Only One Phone Call Away!
Evaporation is not filling your pond up all the way one evening, and waking up the next morning to find the water six inches lower. That's a leak! If your pond is experiencing a loss of water at a more rapid rate, you either have a leak, or your frogs are drinking the water. Seriously, let's figure that it's a leak. What do you do then?
Is Your Rochester (NY) Pond Or Waterfall Leaking? Would You Like Us To Fix It??

Low Edges

Look for any low edges. Settling at the pond's edge is the most common cause of a leak, especially in a new pond. Typically, the low edges are found around the stream and waterfall where settling may have occurred after a few rainfalls. These areas are usually built up during the construction of the pond using the soil from the excavation, and are prone to some settling.

Your first line of defense is to carefully inspect the edges of not only your stream and waterfall, but also the perimeter of the pond. As the dirt around the stream or waterfall settles, it can create low spots that may cause water to escape over the edge of the liner.

Keep your eyes peeled for wet mulch or gravel, or muddy areas around the perimeter of yourpond. If you find a spot that's leaking, all you have to do is lift the liner up and push some soil under it in order to raise the edge. Bingo – leak fixed!

Another possibility is that water is splashing out of your stream. To fix a "splash leak," all you have to do is adjust a few of the rocks under and around your waterfall. This will contain or redirect the splash and it will stop the splash leak. Once again, you've solved the problem the easy and cost-effective way ... using common sense.

Low edges can be built back up by simply backfilling and compacting soil beneath the liner in order to raise the edge of the liner above the water level.

Obstructions In The Stream And Waterfalls

In addition to checking for low edges, you should also check your stream and waterfall. Rocks and excessive plant or algae growth in the stream or  BIOFALLS filter can restrict the flow of water and divert it over the edge of the liner. Plants and algae should be maintained by trimming them back in order to let the water pass freely. All in all, these leaks are extremely easy to fix

Still Leaking?

You've spent 15 minutes or so following the suggestions listed above and you still can't find the leak. What do you do next? It's time for a little more work, and some drastic measures. You'll have to shut your pump off for a day. By doing this, you'll be able to determine the approximate location of the leak.
  • Make sure the pond is filled to the appropriate level.
  • Unplug the pump.
  • Let the pond sit for 24 hours.
  • If the water level drops, then you know the leak is in the pond.

When The Water Drops

  • To find out where the leak is occurring, allow the water level to continue to drop. The level where the water stops dropping is the level where the leak is located.
  • Concentrate your search around the perimeter of the pond at the level that the water has stopped dropping.

Now the fun begins! At this point, you may want to consider calling in Acorn Ponds & Waterfalls, but if you want to continue on your own you'll need to:

  • Remove any rocks around the entire perimeter at the level where the water stopped. You can then carefully check for some sort of puncture, or hole in the liner.
  • When you find the hole, you simply patch it with a liner patch kit available at pond supply retailers.
  • Now you can replace the rocks, fill the pond back to the top, and enjoy!

Steady And Level

If the water level remains the same, then it is safe to assume  that the leak is not in the pond. Now you'll need to check the pipe, the plumbing fittings, and the pump connections for leaks.

Another possible culprit is the faceplate of your skimmer, if you have one. If the water level stopped dropping above the bottom of the faceplate you should investigate the skimmer. It may not have sealed correctly.

If the Leak Is in the Skimmer

  • Investigate the skimmer faceplate without disassembling it.
  • Simply move a few rocks around the front of the skimmer and slide your hand behind the liner, feeling for wet soil around the opening of the skimmer. If the soil is saturated, then the faceplate may have not been installed properly and might be the source of the leak.
  • Remove the faceplate, clean all of the old silicone off the liner, and refer back to the instruction manual on proper procedures for sealing the skimmer faceplate to the skimmer. Hopefully, you've solved the leak.

It's not fun when your pond is losing water. It can be a time-consuming and frustrating process to locate the leak. Hopefully with these steps and tips, you can quickly locate the source of the leak and get right back to enjoying your water garden.

It’s A Great Time To Upgrade Your Pond.

When your pond is in need of repair or a total renovation, it is a great time to look into the upgrades you always wanted.

Have you thought about…
  • Adding a waterfall to your pond?
  • Putting in decorative lights?
  • Using a safety edge for added reassurance?
  • Adding a stream with your waterfall?
  • Installing a bog filter?

These are just some of the ideas to improve your existing pond. We would love to hear about your ideas and vision.  Call us today at (585)-442-6373

Relationship: Client
Project Date: May 2015
Project Price Range: $1,000-$9,999

I hired Tom after interviewing a few companies regarding my existing two-tiered pond with waterfall that had become overgrown with algae and a maintenance nightmare. Most companies offered a maintenance program to clean periodically as the solution, but Tom offered a solution that required limited maintenance.

While the other solutions would have been less costly they didn't get to the root of the problem and were more of a Band-Aid approach. Tom's Aquascape solution made more sense to me in that it included an ionizer, beneficial bacteria doser, skimmer and BOG filtration system. I did question the cost of his solution during the process, but now feel I received fair value for the solution he brought to the table. It has been 2 months since he completed his work and I'm very pleased with the results. The ionizer after finding the correct setting and beneficial bacteria dozer has kept 95+% of the algae away. I get the occasional string of algae that is easy enough to rake out and allows me to see and enjoy the beautiful Koi that I have.

The skimmer has trapped all the debris that falls into the pond after the last few windy months that would have settled on the bottom. While I am grateful for all that and it has truly allowed me to enjoy my pond again, my favorite thing Tom did was install the BOG filtration system, as it has turned the second tier of my pond into a thing of beauty with the incredible plants he put up there. I know that the filtration system is also helping with the algae problems I had, but I really didn't expect to enjoy the beautiful plants up there that give the whole pond a softer look than just looking at a lot of rocks. I also want to communicate that Tom kept his commitments in regards to the timing of the project and has been available if I have any questions.

Even when I don't have questions he has followed up multiple times to make sure everything is going well and to see if I needed anything. All in all, Tom and his guys surpassed my expectations and I would highly recommend working with him and his company.

UV Clarifiers & UV Sterilizers for Rochester New York (NY) Ponds

UV Clarifiers/Sterilizers For Ponds

In some Rochester, NY ponds, algae blooms, or "green water", can be a difficult issue to address safely and effectively.

A well
balanced pond with aquatic plants, fish and filtration system rarely will have this problem but when you have tried everything else, or you do not have an ecosystem pond and you want to be able to see your fish again and clear up the green water, the UV Light Clarifiers/ Sterilizers are the way to go.
How Do I Get Rid Of Green Pond Water In Rochester NY (New York)? We have all your pond algae or green water solutions in Rochester, Monroe County, NY!
UV clarifiers and UV sterilizers: Two terms that are commonly heard in the world of water gardening and sometimes are surrounded by a veil of mystery and disapproval.

You ask some people and they say they are bad, you ask others and they say that they are good. Who is right? The truth is they are both right.

The general conception is that they do the same thing but this is far from the truth. Technically, UV clarifiers and UV sterilizers are the same thing in that they both contain all of the same parts, but where they differ is what they are used for.

UV Clarifier/Sterilizers 101

Since UV clarifiers and sterilizers are made from the same “guts,” let’s dive into how they work. In a nutshell, both units do their job using an extremely high output ultra violet bulb that is protected by a crystal sleeve. These bulbs are designed to emit light (energy) waves that are out of the spectrum of visible light.

So what does this mean? The particular wavelength of light that the bulb emits is harmful when it comes in contact with things around it. So when organisms such as bacteria, parasitic protozoa, and algae cells come in contact with the light from the bulb, their DNA is altered, ultimately causing harm and death to the organism. In essence, they are “nuked.”

Generally, bacteria and algae are pretty sensitive to UV light, and a short exposure is all it takes to “nuke” them. This would be a good job for a UV clarifier. Parasitic protozoa, like ich and costia, require a longer exposure time so the water would need to flow more slowly through the UV light, so a sterilizer is needed.

The longer the organism is exposed to the light, the more damage is done to it and that’s where the main difference between clarifiers and sterilizers lies – how quickly the water flows past the bulb, or how long the water and the organisms are exposed to the light.

Now let’s talk about things that affect the efficiency of the bulb. Generally speaking, although the bulb may still emit light, it is only effective at killing algae for about 8 to 12 months.

The cleanliness of the water and of the crystal sleeve also influence the effectiveness of the bulb - the dirtier the water and sleeve, the less the UV light will be able to come into contact with the nuisance organisms. To prevent sludge and lime build up, the sleeve can be cleaned with a mild detergent, followed by a rinse of clean water.

How They Work

What Is A UV Clarifier or Sterilizer And How Could IT Help My Pond?
Finally, the solution for green pond water in Rochester, Monroe County NY has arrived!

Sterilizer VS. Clarifier

Everyone hates to have that dreaded algae bloom in their pond. If you own a water garden then you know your worst enemy is the unsightly scourge that is green water.

A well-balanced pond ecosystem rarely has problems with green water, but any water feature, when out of balance, might require you to resort to artificial means to control algae blooms.

This is where UV clarifiers come in handy. Their main purpose is to clear the water and get rid of those nasty algae blooms that cause green water. But remember, UV clarifiers only get rid of the single-celled, floating algae. It does not get rid of other forms of algae such as
string or blanket algae.

UV Sterilizers

Solution For Fish Pond Green Water Rochester NY (New York)UV Sterilizers/Clarifiers can be connected together depending on what size pond you have in Rochester, Monroe County, NY.
Sterilizers, on the other hand, do exactly that. They sterilize. Commonly used in the aquarium industry and fish husbandry as another line of defense in preventing major parasite and bacteria outbreaks, they are designed to get rid of and kill just about everything in the pond water.

To accomplish this, they need to have a longer contact time with the water. Sterilizers require extremely slow flow rates compared to clarifiers. So, if you want to make sure you zap everything in your pond, then this is the way to go.

You also should be aware that UV sterilizers cannot be used with certain medication applications because in addition to the effect it has on bacteria and parasites, it can have a similar effect on the makeup of certain medications, often times rendering them useless. So a good rule of thumb is that the sterilizer be removed or turned off when medicating.

Where do these fit with the general hobbyist? A lot of hobbyists use sterilizers on a smaller scale, in the 9 to 24 watt range, in their own quarantine tanks. Whether you choose a UV clarifier or sterilizer, it should be installed in-line after the skimmer or other mechanical filter, pre-filtering the water to keep the unit from coming in contact with heavy debris.

For Installation of your  UV sterilizer or clarifier, we need to know two things to help decide which unit is appropriate for your pond –  approximately, how many gallons of water does your pond hold and what do you want the UV to accomplish? Clarifiers and sterilizers definitely have their place in the hobby, but they are only helpful when used in the correct application. Knowing when and how to use them can save you from a lot of headaches and let downs that result from improper application. Certified Aquascape Contractor of Rochester, NY can help you with the installation of a UV Clarifier/Sterilizer, contact us today!

Planning A Pond Renovation In Rochester New York (NY)???

Many people view backyard ponds simply as an addition to your house – when you install it you are done. While that is true that a pond is indeed another room to your house, you’re never really done with this addition! In reality, it’s actually more like a living thing that is always evolving, so don’t be afraid to add on and change it as often as you want!

Whether you simply move a couple rocks, forcing the water to fall in a completely different direction, or maybe you’ll go all out and add a 50-foot stream, a bog filter, or a Pondless® Waterfall in another part of your yard, the possibilities for growing your water feature are almost infinite.

Dreaming is always the first step to planning.  In your mind, what would be the perfect backyard paradise? Here are some questions to ask yourself as you search for your perfect pond makeover.

Think About The These Design Possibilities In Your Future Pond

  • What do you enjoy most about water gardening – the plants, fish, frogs, turtles, birds, or terrestrial landscaping? Build your dream pond with that as your emphasis.
  • What places have you visited that look and feel “perfect” to you? A streamin the mountains?  A spring in the woods?  Recreate aspects of these places on a smaller scale.
  • Where do you spend most of your time when you’re at home?  Will you spend more time outside or inside?  Plan with that in mind.
  • What would make your yard a “paradise?”
  • Would you like to be able to swim with your fish in a natural recreational pond?
  • What do you like (or dislike) about your existing pond?
  • Do you like the tropics? Find some rare plants and bring them into your own backyard.
Hopefully you’re well on your way to dreaming about creating or enhancing your own personal paradise.  As you gaze out upon the wintry landscape, imagine what it can look like in the spring and go from there!  The possibilities are limitless and you can always grow and expand with each addition you make.  Now’s the time to start your wheels turning.  Spring’ll be back before you know it.
