Which Fish Species Can I Add To My Backyard Pond Near Rochester New York (NY)
Adding Fish To A Backyard Pond Near Rochester NY

Diverse Pond Fish: Beyond Koi

Are there alternative aquatic companions for your pond besides koi? Absolutely! Goldfish, those familiar faces in pet store tanks, are an ideal choice for novice pond keepers due to their hardiness. They come in an array of sizes, shapes, and colors, making them a versatile addition to container water gardens or preformed ponds.

There's another fish that closely resembles koi but on a smaller scale – the shubunkin. This single-tailed, elongated goldfish shares the beauty of koi but lacks their distinctive "barbels" or whiskers. Shubunkins are bound to capture your affection, offering variety to your pond's aquatic life.

Fall Plant Care For Your Pond

Fall Plant Care For Your Fish Pond, Rochester New York (NY) Near Me
Fall Fish Pond Care In Rochester NY

Essential Fall Plant Care

As the weather cools down, it's crucial to adjust your pond plant care routine. Cease fertilization to signal the approaching end of the season. Clear away dead foliage to prevent excessive debris from decomposing in the water.

Additionally, remember to trim plants around the pond to avoid withering and decay. Prune hardy water lilies close to the plant's base and cut back marginal plants to prevent drooping into the water.

Decaying Leaves In The Pond

Decaying leaves pose a threat to your fish by emitting harmful gases. Regularly remove this debris before it sinks to the pond's bottom. While you don't have to eliminate every leaf, focus on clearing the majority.

Consider using protective netting to simplify leaf removal during the fall season. This careful autumn maintenance will ensure the health and vitality of your pond ecosystem.

NY| 7 Ways To Attract Wildlife In And Around Your Waterscape In Rochester New York Or Near Me

Attracting and maintaining wildlife in and around your waterscape can be a rewarding and enjoyable experience. Here are some tips to help you create a habitat that is welcoming to a variety of wildlife:

1.  Provide habitat: Adding habitat elements such as native plants, nesting boxes, and artificial structures can attract wildlife to your waterscape.

2.  Plant native vegetation: Native plants provide food and shelter for many species of wildlife. Choose plants that are adapted to the local climate and soil conditions to create a healthy ecosystem.

3.  Add a variety of water depths: Different species of wildlife require different depths of water to thrive. Incorporate shallow areas for frogs and tadpoles, deeper pools, and even underwater caves or tunnels to provide diverse habitats for fish and aquatic life.

4.  Keep water clean: Clean water is essential for attracting and maintaining wildlife in your waterscape. Ensure that your waterscape is free of chemicals, debris, and pollutants that can harm wildlife.

5.  Use natural materials: Using natural materials in and around your waterscape such as rocks, logs, and leaf litter can provide hiding places and shelter for wildlife.

6.  Maintain the ecosystem: A healthy ecosystem is essential for attracting and maintaining wildlife in your waterscape. This means maintaining a balanced population of plants and animals, and avoiding the use of chemicals or other harmful practices that can disrupt the ecosystem.

7.  Be patient: It may take some time for wildlife to discover your waterscape and begin using it as a habitat. Be patient and continue to maintain your waterscape, and eventually, wildlife will come.

By following these tips, you can create a waterscape that is not only beautiful but also provides a thriving habitat for a variety of wildlife.

How Should I Add Koi Or Goldfish To My Backyard Pond?

2/15/2023

How Should I Add Koi or Goldfish to my Backyard Pond in Rochester New York (NY) ?
Picture
Introducing koi and goldfish to a pond can be an exciting and rewarding experience. Here are some steps to follow:

  1. Prepare the pond: Ensure that your pond is ready to accommodate your fish. Make sure that the pond is large enough for the number of fish you plan to introduce and has appropriate filtration, aeration, and vegetation.
  2. Acclimate the fish: Before introducing your fish to the pond, you should first acclimate them to the water temperature and chemistry. Float the bag containing the fish in the pond water for about 15-20 minutes to let the water in the bag gradually reach the same temperature as the pond water. You can also add a small amount of pond water to the bag every 5-10 minutes to help the fish adjust to the water chemistry.
  3. Release the fish: Once the fish are acclimated, it's time to release them into the pond. Open the bag and let the fish swim out on their own. Do not pour the water from the bag into the pond, as this can introduce harmful substances into the pond water.
  4. Monitor the fish: After introducing the fish to the pond, monitor them closely for the first few days to ensure they are adjusting well to their new environment. Observe their behavior, appetite, and overall health. Keep an eye out for signs of stress or disease, such as lethargy, loss of appetite, or abnormal swimming behavior.
If you notice any issues, take appropriate measures to address them.

Is a Backyard Koi Pond Hard to Maintain?

1/31/2023

Backyard Koi Pond Maintenance | Rochester New York | NY|
Picture

For many Rochester (NY) homeowners, a backyard koi pond is a beautiful and peaceful addition to their landscape. However, some pond owners may find themselves facing a range of issues, from algae blooms and water quality issues, to difficulty keeping their fish healthy. If you’re having trouble maintaining your koi pond, it may be due to the way the pond was built or designed.

At Acorn Ponds & Waterfalls, we understand the challenges that come with owning a koi pond. We also know that many pond owners may not be aware of the underlying causes of their maintenance problems. So, we’ve compiled a list of common koi pond issues, and what you can do to solve them naturally.

  • Algae Blooms: Algae blooms are a common problem in koi ponds. They can cause cloudy water, an unpleasant odor, and even harm your fish. The root cause of algae blooms is often excess sunlight, unbalanced system and/or a lack of proper filtration.

Solution: Plant aquatic plants that absorb algae forming nutrients. Don’t overfeed your fish and additionally, a high-quality biological filtration system can help to remove excess nutrients from the water that may be feeding the algae. Draining and cleaning the pond annually is also recommended.

  • Water Quality Issues: Poor water quality can lead to a range of problems, from health issues in your fish to an unattractive appearance. The cause of poor water quality can be anything from poor circulation to an imbalanced ecosystem.

Solution: If you’re experiencing water quality issues, you may need to install a new biological filtration system, additional aeration, plants and/or make changes to the way your pond is structured. Do not overfeed or have too many fish. Acorn Ponds & Waterfalls can help you identify the cause of the problem and provide a tailored solution that will work for you.

  • Fish Health Problems: If your fish are constantly sick or dying, it may be due to poor water quality or a lack of proper filtration.

Solution: To keep your fish healthy, it’s important to have a proper filtration system in place. The benefits of adding a waterfall go beyond aesthetic appeal. Adding a waterfall to a pond is one of the most effective ways to maintain healthy pond exogen levels. A waterfall can provide an additional source of biological filtration for your pond, promoting healthy growth and cleanliness.

At Acorn Ponds & Waterfalls, we are dedicated to helping pond owners solve these and other common problems. We can design and build a new pond that will meet your specific needs, or make changes to your existing pond to improve its performance and beauty. Contact us today to schedule a consultation.

Most Common Pond - Water Feature Problems We've Had To Fix | Rochester New York | NY
Picture
Would you like to save a lot of money, time and headaches on your new project? Of course, who wouldn't right?

Over the past 20+ years customers have come to us
with all kinds of water feature problems throughout the Rochester New York area and beyond. An improperly designed waterfall can cause a great deal of water loss, or it may just look unnatural and need a face lift or rejuvenation.

It's sad but true, our primary business is refurbishing and maintaining existing ponds to make them function properly. Some of these ponds installed by other "professional" pond installers or landscapers leave little to be desired, and loads of problems that drive people crazy and force them to look for help.

If you are thinking to hire a professional, please be sure to research your contractor first. This could  save a lot of frustration down the road.

We've been hired numerous times to re-do a pond that was recently built. Water features are meant to help you relax and enjoy them, not get you frustrated.

Marine biologist Wallace J. Nichols coined the term “blue mind" to refer to the calm, peaceful sense of happiness that is triggered by being in or near water.

Being around water gives our overstimulated brains and senses a rest. Creativity thrives in this relaxed state, as the brain is able to make new and unusual connections because it is not overly distracted by visual and auditory stimulation.

So get outside near your pond and relax!

What Makes An Ecosystem Pond?

9/2/2021

What Is An Ecosystem Pond?|Rochester|New York|NY
Ecosystem Ponds In Rochester NY

The basic goal behind an ecosystem pond is to take an otherwise closed body of water and turn it into its own thriving Rochester (NY) mini “ecosystem.” In nature, streams and rivers and the resulting pools of water along the way are constantly renewed with fresh, clean water, allowing them to support life while flushing toxins away down the stream.

Unless you are lucky enough to be blessed with a natural stream or source of water on your property, you won’t have the luxury of a naturally renewing water source. You have to find another way to keep your pond water clean and free of toxins. Through proper planning and the selection of appropriate filtration equipment, this is actually easier to accomplish than you might imagine.

A complete ecosystem pond consists of a biological filter and skimmer which combine to form a unique filtration system. Other necessary components are pond liner and underlayment, a re-circulating pump and plumbing, rocks and gravel, aquatic plants, fish and beneficial bacteria.

Why Are My Koi Eating My Pond Plants?

Why Are My Koi Eating My Pond Plants|Rochester|New York|NY
Picture

It could be that they are hungry!  The first item to note is how many fish you have. If the fish are competing for food, they will eat everything they can get a hold of... including your plants.

If you have the proper ratio of fish (one inch per square foot) and they are still eating your plants, try feeding them a little more fish food.  Fish much prefer fish food and pellets to plants, and if given the opportunity, will eat the fish food instead.

And finally, keep in mind that koi are inquisitive fish and explore their surroundings with their mouths. If you catch them rooting around the base of your waterlilies, try using larger rocks around the base of the plant so the fish can’t move them and destroy the planting

Can Warm Temperatures Have An Impact On My Koi Fish Or Pond?

It’s July in Rochester (NY) and the summer heat may have you questioning the water temperature in your koi pond. Although Koi can survive in up to 90 degrees F. it doesn’t mean they’re healthy at that temperature.

Make sure your pond has plenty of circulation and oxygenation with waterfalls and/or deep aeration to protect your fish from the heat.
Picture

How Will Aeration Help My Pond?

The addition of  deep aeration in the summer will help turn over the entire pond including warm surface temperatures and cool bottom temperatures which will help cool the pond.

Once summer is over, the aeration system should be changed to shallow water. This will help keep an opening in the ice and provide a slightly warmer temperature for your fish on the pond bottom.

Waterfall aeration will help add oxygen to the pond encouraging growth of beneficial bacteria which also helps keep the water clear.

Is Wetland Filtration Right For My Koi Pond|Rochester|NY|New York|near Me
Wetland Filter Rochester NY
Having water clarity problems or thinking about upgrading your Rochester NY pond? You may want to consider adding a wetland filter.

A constructed wetland or bog filter functions similar to biological filter (waterfall filter) except there is an up-flow system that recirculates the water underneath and a shallow, plant filled area with gravel to help bacteria colonization. It mimics a natural wetland and provides crystal clear water quality.
If wetland filtration was a car, think of it as the Tesla.

The addition of a properly installed constructed (bog) wetlands will make any pond look natural and beautiful. Did you know more plant and animal life is associated with natural wetlands than any ecosystem in the world? By adding a wetland you are not only improving your ponds health but also adding to the diversity of nature.

Constructed wetlands can be installed on new water gardens or added to an existing pond!

What's The Problem With Algae?

Algae Problems|Is There Too Much Algae?|Rochester|New York|NY
Pond Algae Solutions In Rochester NY

A Little Algae Is Good For A Pond

Before you panic upon seeing a buildup of algae in your Rochester (NY) pond, keep in mind that algae are a completely normal part of any organic pond ecosystem. A small amount of algae in your water feature is perfectly okay! In fact, it’s a sign of a healthy ecosystem.

Pristine, over-treated water isn’t natural, nor is it good for your fish who enjoy snacking on algae that cling to rocks. Algae only become a problem when the growth becomes excessive and therefore difficult to manage.

An abundance of algae has a simple cause – too much sunlight and an overabundance of nutrient-rich water. That’s why a well-designed pond includes proper filtration to diminish the nutrients that contribute to the growth of algae. In addition, aquatic plants compete for the same food source as algae and can help control its growth. The main goal in keeping clear, healthy water is not to completely rid your pond of algae, but rather to keep it in balance with nature.

Can I Give My Koi A Fruit Snack?

Can I Feed Fruit ToMy Koi?|Rochester|New York|NY
Pond Food In Rochester NY

It can be fun, although not necessary to give your pond fish a summer snack from time to time (not more than once a week). Koi in particular will enjoy watermelon, grapefruit, orange slices, and even Honey Nut Cheerios.

Be sure the fish are active before feeding and only toss in a VERY small amount of any snack (the amount the fish can eat right away) since old food is not good for your pond. In particular, peas will sink to the bottom of the pond.

Is Your Pond Ready For Summer?

Summer Pond Maintenance|Rochester|New York|NY
Summer Pond Maintenance

As we approach summer in Rochester (NY), there are three things to remember about your water feature to keep a balanced ecosystem pond along with happy fish.

  1. Be sure to remove dying leaves and flowers before they have a chance to decay in warmer water.
  2. Aquatic plants such as water lilies help provide fish with shade from the heat of summer sun, cooling the water and making algae control easier too.
  3. if you feed your fish, feed them in the morning and be careful not to overfeed. Uneaten food decays faster in warmer water and can pollute the pond.

It It Good To Have Frogs In A Pond?|Rochester|New York|NY
Frogs & Ponds In Rochester NY

While eating up insects in your Rochester (NY) backyard pond,  frogs add to the diversity of species. By coexisting productively with plants, fish, insects and other wildlife, they help play a role in your pond's ecosystem.

As a matter of fact, the number of amphibians in your pond can be a good indicator of your pond's health!

If you are interested in drawing them to your backyard, you shouldn't have to try very hard. It's not unusual for frogs to show up in your ponds because ponds provide two things that frogs crave: water & food!

How To Measure The Water Level In Your Pond

How To Measure Pond Water Level|Water Loss|Leaks|Rochester|New York|NY
Picture
If you think you might have a leak or just want to monitor the water level in your Rochester (NY)  pond, looking at water lines on rocks is NOT an indication of water loss. Water wicks on rocks and varies, making it ebb and flow and not a good way to see if you are losing water.

For a good reference, check for something that is plastic, like your skimmer box. Plastic does not hold water and will be a much better way to assess any water loss. Inside the skimmer there is usually screws that could be used to mark the water level.
